Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Challenge

CLT is a partner in the Transport, Industrial and Commercial Refrigeration project. This project is an investigation into energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from the transport, industrial and commercial refrigeration sectors in the UK including datacentres. The vision is to create a comprehensive data driven and whole systems approach to support decarbonisation strategy and policy within the sector.

It will identify innovation levers to facilitate sector-wide decarbonisation and achieve net zero. It will provide roadmaps and strategies for end users based on a comprehensive data-driven and whole systems evidence base. These outputs will be used to drive forward sector decarbonisation strategies and policies.

Solution

CLT led on the industrial sectors, food and drink and chemicals and pharmaceuticals. This included calculating baseline refrigeration related energy consumption and emissions for these sectors, developing options for sector specific benchmarks, creating a roadmap for emissions mitigation which includes an overview of opportunities for innovation and best-practice and training materials for equipment users.

Outcome

The outcomes of this work will provide a thorough understanding of refrigeration related energy usage and emissions in datacentres, food and drink manufacturing sites, and chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, retail, cold stores and transport refrigeration units.

It will provide a roadmap for emissions mitigation, and opportunities for innovation and best-practice. Outputs will include sector-specific guidance, training and a programme of events.
