BEP offers financial, technical and commercial support to enter a new and exciting growth market. The first competition is for three projects to demonstrate solar power, storage and home energy management technology in Brazil. Approximately £3m in grant funding will be awarded in this round.

Pilot 1, the Pilar Solar pilot, will include the installation of photovoltaic panels, batteries and smart monitoring systems to provide energy to low income families in a community in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. The project involves strong community engagement and will be undertaken in association with a local utility.

A total of £9 million of grants will be awarded for a series of demonstration projects in solar and storage, smart grids, biogas and biodiesel sectors over the next three years.

The challenge competitions are designed to select projects that demonstrate innovative low carbon technologies that can be scaled up and that address specific challenges of the Brazilian social and market environment.

BEP provides UK funding and international expertise to support Brazil’s emergence as a renewable energy powerhouse. BEP will accelerate Brazil’s transition to sustainable, clean energy that can give disadvantaged parts of society more control over the source and cost of the energy they use.

BEP will do this by funding demonstrations of innovative technologies through pilot projects implemented by Brazilian and international companies. And BEP will help Brazil prepare for progress by adapting policy and regulations to promote the use of clean energy technologies.

The BEP competitions are being delivered by Adam Smith International (ASI), Carbon Limiting Technologies (CLT) and hubz. BEP is a 3-year programme funded by the Prosperity Fund, the £1.2 billion UK Government fund to develop partnerships that promote inclusive economic growth in emerging economies, mutual prosperity, and progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
